Grass Valley, CA. The Sonarae audio monitor from Graham-Patten was chosen for the TV Technology STAR Award (Superior Technology Award Recipient) at IBC2008. Of the hundreds of products displayed, only twenty-five were chosen for this honor.

It is the first product designed to allow engineers in an NLE environment to monitor audio quality, without distortion and without changing the audio. Sonarae is rich in the features that audio engineers requested. With up to eight AES/EBU pairs of inputs with complete input selection capabilities, one can select from single channels or accumulate channels into a stereo or mono mix-down format, while maintaining the level at the output at a constant value, or select individual stereo channels for easy access to multi-language audio tracks. Operators can listen to individual left or right audio channels at the output or select various channel combinations; and choose 5.1, 6.1, and 7.1 surround sound stereo mix down along with set-up, learn, and clear functions to store custom stereo mix-down formats.

According to the sponsors, the STAR Award is designed to celebrate and showcase the preeminent technological innovations available to the broadcast industry. “STAR awards are given to interesting new products that help a user save money or accomplish a task in an easier way,” said Mark Hallinger, Editor of TV Technology Europe. “The products selected help advance the industry—some were chosen because of technical novelty or innovation, some because they filled an important gap in the production or transmission chain, and some because they were just cool products.”

Sonarae also received the Broadcast Engineering Pick Hit Award at NAB 2008.
