Grass Valley, CA. At 5:30 Sunday morning, Kenyon Blower uploads the American Motorcycle Association Supercross race video to CBS and the Speed channel, after spending all night in a long white trailer editing the video. “That deadline is firm, so it is imperative that everything works. And everything has performed flawlessly from day one,” says Blower, founder of Location Edit, LLC.
Blower chose to include two Sonarae audio monitor systems from Graham-Patten Systems in his mobile post-production system. “This is a first-rate, state-of-the-art non-linear editing facility. I researched very carefully to make sure I had the best solution for audio monitoring. Graham-Patten has a great reputation with their D/ESAM mixers, and I was impressed with the Sonarae quality. There were other ways to go, but I didn’t want to have some Rube Goldberg setup. Sonarae wasn’t the cheapest solution, but it turned out to be a very good choice.”
Both CBS and Speed require Surround 5.1 sound. Blower uses two edit bays, each equipped with Final Cut Pro, and both editors must be able to monitor audio quality. Given the confined space of the trailer, it’s also important that each editor can use headphones “to save our sanity” – though they can switch the audio to speakers if a producer wants to listen in. He especially likes the system’s ease of use and fast learning curve. “I’m there every show, but the second editor may be different each time. It takes about two minutes to train an editor on Sonarae – I can just push a single button to have 5.1 mix down at my fingertips. I like it that I can isolate one channel or listen to the whole mix. Sonare lets me ensure the integrity of the 5.1 audio all the way through.”
Blower has operated Vide-Post, a post-production facility located in San Diego, since 1989. Vide-Post started as a full service, on-line linear editing facility, and then moved with the industry to provide non-linear editing. On January 1, 2009, he edited the first show from the Location Edit trailer. He enthusiastically describes the technology, specifically selected for on-location editing.
There are duel Final Cut Pro edit bays, all high-definition and capable of Surround 5.1. There are 24 TerraBytes of fiber channel storage, and he can produce D5, DVC Pro HD, DigiData, and HD Cam. Blower can record and output in any format. For example, Location Edit supplies the Speed channel with 720p, and CBS with 1080i. Blower says that Location Edit is “the most versatile edit system out there”.
